Louisiana State Police are investigating a sexual assault complaint against St. Bernard Parish President Dave Peralta.
Fox 8 quotes a state police spokesperson as saying the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office asked state police on Sunday to investigate.
Investigators are not confirming the identity of the victim or who filed the complaint, saying only that an investigation is being conducted into the allegation and that their findings will be turned over to the St. Bernard Parish district attorney.
Trooper Melissa Matey described the investigation as "fluid." She said investigators were conducting interviews and gathering information.
In an email to Fox 8, Peralta said "I am embarrassed by the baseless allegations made against me."
"This is a sad and baffling domestic issue that should have never risen to this level," he said. "I am confident this will be resolved."
Peralta added, "I will continue to focus on my responsibility to this parish and will not be sidetracked by a personal disagreement."
