But sheriff's office can't point to anything in particular that it's doing that may have caused the drop
There's been a big drop in the number of murders committed in unincorporated Jefferson Parish.
According to crime statistics released by the sheriff's office, there were 26 murders in the parish from January 1 to the end of September of this year. During the same time period last year, there were 43 murders.
"That's a significant decrease of 39.5 percent over last year's murder rate," says sheriff's office spokesman, Col. John Fortunato.
But Fortunato says they cannot point to anything in particular that the sheriff's office is doing to explain the drop.
"With murder being a crime of passion, there's not a whole lot law enforcement officers can do, across the country, in preventing one individual from killing another individual."
Overall crime in unincorporated Jefferson is down 1.7 percent, with decreases in robberies, assaults, burglaries and auto thefts and increases in rapes and thefts.
