Samples confirm match with oil from spill

The U.S. Coast Guard says samples collected from an oil sheen in the Gulf confirm that the oil matches that released by the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

The sheen, above the site of the April 2010 disaster, was first reported by BP on September 16.

The Coast Guard says the exact source of the sheen is uncertain but could be residual oil associated with debris left a mile below the surface on the floor of the Gulf

BP and the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig Transocean have been notified that they may be held liable for the sheen.  The Coast Guard says it has sent a Notice of Federal Interest to both companies.
