19-year-old allegedly put rum in boy's feeding tube at hospital

A 19-year-old Belle Chasse man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder for pouring rum into his 2-month old son's feeding tube at a local hospital.

Cesar Ruiz was charged after doctors at Ochsner Hospital on Jefferson Highway discovered that his infant son Lucas Ruiz had a blood alcohol content of .289 percent.

The boy had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since October 16 when he experienced breathing difficulties.  On October 28, the infant began having seizures.

Ruiz allegedly took a feeding tube home from the hospital, poured rum into the tube at home and then brought it back to the facility.  Investigators allege that he also poured more rum into the tube at the hospital.

Ruiz reportedly told a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's detective he did it to relieve his son's suffering.  He said he did not intend to harm his son.
