Young says it's time for the tolls to go

Jefferson Parish President John Young has voiced strong opposition to the idea of extending the tolls on the Crescent City Connection for another twenty years.

"I'm against the renewal of the tolls, absolutely against the renewal of the tolls based on the history of misappropriation, abuse, waste," Young said Thursday morning in an interview with Fox 8.

"I'm not against tolls in general, but if we're going to have tolls lets toll all the bridges or lets remove tolls from all the bridges.  We're being unfairly taxed."

Young says most people he has spoken with share his opinion.

Those who support the idea of renewing the tolls say they fear the state will drop the ball on maintenance of the bridge, grass cutting, litter pickup and lighting of the bridge.  But Young says the state is obligated to assume responsibility for all but the decorative lighting of the CCC bridges.

He also notes that if voters in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes decide on November 6 to renew the tolls, the fees charged to motorists could be increased at anytime by the legislature.

"I don't think anybody, even the people in favor of the tolls, would dispute the fact that the money has been mismanaged, misspent and I just think it's time to end that, I think it's time for the tolls to go."
