Final absentee ballots will be counted on Saturday morning

The fate of a proposal to renew the tolls on the Crescent City Connection remained uncertain as "absentee" votes were still being counted in Orleans Parish.

The overall vote, by residents of Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes was extremely close.

With some 300,000 votes cast, it appeared that the renewal was approved by just 8 votes.

All remaining absentee ballots will be counted on Saturday morning.

Voters in Jefferson Parish voted 54% to 46% against the tolls. Voters in Plaquemines Parish voted against the tolls 56% to 44%.  Orleans Parish voters voted 55% to 45% in favor of the renewal of tolls for 20 years on the bridges.
