LSU Ag Center says the average 16-pounder costs $18.45

Louisiana residents are paying more for their Thanksgiving turkeys this year.

The LSU Ag Center tells the Baton Rouge Advocate the cost is up about 34%, or just under $5 from 2011.

The average price for a 16-pound bird is $18.45, or $1.15 a pound.  Last year the cost was $13.87.

The good news for shoppers is that turkeys are frequently offered as loss-leaders to get customers into stores to buy the rest of items for their holiday dinners.  The Ag Center says four out of five Thanksgiving turkeys are sold on special.
