District attorney asks city council to approve his proposed budget as is
District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro asked the City Council during Wednesday's budget hearings to approve the amount the mayor has budgeted for his office in 2013, which is $6.2 million.
Cannizzaro said while his office's funding is being cut for next year, the mayor's office has provided them with assistance with certain health care costs, and his office will deplete its cash reserve to maintain its operations at current levels.
"Mayor Landrieu faced an extremely difficult fiscal situation this year, and I want to commend him for constructing a sustainable budget under very difficult circumstances," Cannizzaro said.
The DA also touted his office's achievements during his tenure, saying "it is a leaner, more aggressive office that fights for the law-abiding citizens of this community on a daily basis in the criminal district court."
