Initial development work to be completed in a year
Ground has been broken for a new veterans cemetery seven miles northwest of Slidell.
The site, along S. Perimeter Road just outside the gates of Camp Villere, will eventually serve the needs of 100,000 veterans and their families.
The initial development phase of the 75-acre facility is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2013 and will include construction of a main entrance, roads, a combined administration and public information center and an assembly center for funeral services.
Initial construction costs are being paid for by a $8.3 million grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
