The bonfire is in the shape of a birthday cake to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the event

The 25th Algiers Bonfire & Concert is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 8, from 5pm to 9pm, on the levee adjacent to the Algiers ferry landing.

The New Orleans Fire Department built the bonfire.

"What we built this year, given it's the 25th anniversary of the bonfire in Algiers, we built a birthday cake," says NOFD Assistant Superintendent Tim McConnell.

The bonfire in the shape of a cake is 25 feet tall and made from salvaged wood and wood donated by a lumber yard. Firefighters spent about two weeks building it.

"We make sure it's all done correctly and that it's safe, is the key. Keep everybody back far enough and that it's all attached to itself, nailed together correctly so it won't fall and cause any danger," McConnell said.

The bonfire will be lit shortly after Santa arrives by boat at 8:30pm.
