Republican Wins District 5 Seat On LA Supreme Court

GOP will hold 4-3 majority on high court

Republican Jeff Hughes has been elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court in a runoff with Democrat John Michael Guidry.

Both candidates currently serve on the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal in Baton Rouge and Guidry was seeking to become the first black Supreme Court justice from District 5.  Hughes becomes the district's first Republican justice.

The 60-year-old Hughes has served on the state appeals court for eight years and previously served 14 years as a state district judge.

Hughes had been endorsed by Governor Jindal while Guidry ran with the endorsement of Senator Mary Landrieu.

Hughes finished with 52,939 votes, or 53%, to Guidry's 47,259 votes, or 47%. Turnout for the runoff was 19.5%.
