Homicides went from 49 in 2011 to 33 in 2012, a 32% drop, Newell Normand says
There were fewer murders in Jefferson Parish in 2012 than in 2011 and overall crime in the parish dropped in 2012 as well, Sheriff Newell Normand announced Friday.
Normand says overall crime dropped 4.8% from 2011, and last year's homicide rate dropped 32%, from 49 homicides in 2011 to 33 in 2012.
"We will continue to finetune the department, to look at ourselves critically everyday, and that's what we do, to see where there are opportunities for improvement," Normand said. "We're not afraid to say when something doesn't work. We change course often."
