Col. Mike Edmonson meets with officials in Washington, D.C., Delaware and Maryland
As co-chair of the governor's study group on school security and safety, formed in response to the shootings at a Connecticut elementary school, state police commander, Col. Mike Edmonson, has begun the statewide review of school safety with a fact-finding trip.
Edmonson tells 99.5FM he was in Washington, D.C. Tuesday and in Delaware Wednesday meeting with officials on school safety/security.
"My purpose for going to Washington, D.C. was to meet with the FBI to talk about what we're doing in Louisiana, to make sure that we're getting the full support from the federal government, whatever we need," Edmonson said.
"I got to meet with the Department of Homeland Security to talk about active shooter scenarios," he said.
Edmonson says when he returns to Louisiana, he'll share the information he's gathered with state officials. He's scheduled to report his findings to the state House Homeland Security Committee on Jan. 17.
