Col. Mike Edmonson to offer his initial assessment of school safety at House committee hearing
The commander of Louisiana State Police says he plans to offer his initial assessment of security measures in place at schools across the state when he appears before the House Select Committee on Homeland Security at the state capitol.
Col. Mike Edmonson co-chairs a study group that's been directed by the governor to review and assess school safety statewide in light of the shootings last month at a Connecticut elementary school.
Edmonson tells 99.5FM various law enforcement agencies already have plans in place on how to handle emergency situations such as dealing with an armed intruder in a school. He says he doesn't plan to recommend changes to school security procedures at this point.
"I think we're very premature in recommending changes right now. I think we need to do an assessment first and I think we need to do a lot of listening." Edmonson said.
