An estimated 51 barrels of crude oil leaked at refinery in Chalmette Sunday, DEQ spokesman says
A spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Quality says an oil leak at the ExxonMobil refinery in Chalmette around 6am Sunday appears to have been caused by a broken valve in a crude oil processing unit.
Rodney Mallett said Wednesday an estimated 51 barrels of crude oil leaked out on site and on concrete.
Mallett says they believe weather conditions at the time helped to carry the oil and drop it on vehicles. Dozens of residents reported finding crude splattered on their vehicles.
ExxonMobil has set up a hotline for impacted citizens: 1-855-276-2409.
Mallett says the leak remains under investigation, and DEQ will take appropriate action if necessary.
