The panel could fill the new position as early as next week

The attorney for the commission that will choose an inspector general for Jefferson Parish says the commission may make its choice at its next meeting on Wednesday, January 30, at 5pm.

"I don't know what they're going to do. That won't happen until next week. They could decide not to decide," says Steve Scheckman, the commission's legal counsel.

Scheckman told us Thursday that the 5-member Jefferson Parish Ethics and Compliance Commission is not under a legally imposed deadline to fill the new position, but they want to fill it as soon as possible.

"I know that they want to make sure that they're making the right decision and they're picking the right person," Scheckman said.

The commission interviewed the three finalists for the job on Wednesday. The finalists are David Holmgren of Virginia, a deputy IG at the IRS; David McClintock of Maryland, the IG of Baltimore and Nicholas Schuler Jr. of Chicago, a deputy IG for the city's Board of Education.

Thirty-nine people applied for the position.
