Lallie Kemp Regional to remain under control of LSU for foreseeable future

While most of LSU's south Louisiana hospitals are set for privatization, the head of the LSU hospital system says its facility in Tangipahoa Parish will stay under university control for the foreseeable future.

Frank Opelka, LSU's vice president for health affairs and medical education, said he hasn't been able to find a "community partner'' who would be a good fit to run Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence.

The university system has preliminary agreements for private hospital operators to take over the management of four LSU facilities in Lake Charles, Lafayette, Houma and New Orleans. And Baton Rouge hospital operations are shifting to a private facility this year.

Opelka says talks also are underway for a lease arrangement in Bogalusa, with hopes to soon work out a deal.
