Pulls trigger while police attempt to pull him over in Kingspoint subdivision
A man suspected of robbing a Slidell bank on Wednesday, shot himself in the head as police were attempting to pull him over in the Kingspoint subdivision.
Police say the man inflicted the wound with a small caliber handgun and was undergoing treatment at University Hospital in New Orleans.
The Gulf Coast Bank at 1900 Oak Harbor Boulevard was the scene of a robbery at about 12:15pm. The robber, wearing a hoodie, a mask and gloves, made off with an undisclosed amout of cash.
St. Tammany Sheriff's deputies responded to an alarm and spotted a vehicle fleeing the area. Within a few minutes, the vehicle was sighted in the Kingspoint subdivision and the driver shot himself as deputies moved in to make an arrest.
Deputies found clothes matching the description of those worn by the robber in the vehicle along with "a large amount of cash."
