Driver believed to be only occupant, is presumed dead

A dump truck that caught fire and crashed into Lake Pontchartrain from the southbound Causeway around 5pm Wednesday has been recovered, and the Causeway, which was closed during the recovery operations, is now open in both directions, authorities say.

The driver of the truck is believed to be the only occupant and is presumed dead. A body has not been recovered.

Authorities say the chain of events may have been set off by a blowout of a tire.

The vehicle knocked out over 100 feet of railing about four-and-a-half miles north of Metairie.

Divers located the submerged vehicle Wednesday night.
