Dewayne Smith was dismissed less than 2 years after he got the job

Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White has been fired, after less than two years on the job.

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Melvin "Kip'' Holden's administration fired him on Wednesday. White says he received a letter around noon from the city's chief administrative officer, William Daniel, that there was a "substantial disagreement with the direction of the Baton Rouge Police Department.''

There is some speculation that the dismissal may be linked to disputes White had with the police union.

The firing came after months of rumors that White's position was in jeopardy.

Regarding his future, White says, "When one door closes, another opens.''
