Says he appreciates pope's recognition of the health issues he's facing
New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond issued this statement Monday on the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI:
"I have a great deal of admiration for Pope Benedict XVI and appreciate his recognition of the health issues he is facing. I admire his humility in asking the cardinals to come together in prayer to select his successor. I ask all Catholics to remember the Holy Father in prayer and to pray for the cardinals as they prepare for the conclave in order to select a successor for Pope Benedict XVI."
The Pope announced Monday that he will be resigning at the end of this month, becoming the first pope to step down in 600 years.
He said the duties of being pope require "strength of mind and body," and that he simply isn't strong enough anymore.
The 85-year-old Benedict became the pontiff in April 2005. A conclave of Cardinals will meet to select a successor next month.
