Rep. Austin Badon says prospective gun owners should know how to use a gun safely and how to store it safely

State Rep. Austin Badon, D-New Orleans, says he plans to introduce a bill for the upcoming Legislative session that would require a person to take and pass a gun safety course before they could buy a gun in Louisiana.

Badon, a guest on the Denny Schaffer Show Wednesday, said prospective gun owners should know in advance of purchase how to use a gun safely and how to store it safely.

According to the bill currently being drafted by Badon:

The safety course requirement would apply to new gun purchases only.

A person could take the safety course now and buy a gun years from now, just as long as they've taken the safety course.

The prospective gun owner would pay for the safety course.

A gun owner who wants to buy another gun would have to take the safety course if they don't have a concealed weapons permit.

A veteran who's been honorably discharged would not have to take the safety course.

The safety course requirement would not apply to private gun sales between individuals.
