24,000 refunds had been issued by Wednesday morning

A spokesman for the state Department of Revenue says the department has begun sending out refunds to Louisiana tax filers for the 2012 tax year.

Byron Henderson says 24,000 refunds had been issued as of Wednesday morning. At this point, he says it's too early to say how much the average refund will be this year.

"Last year, with a total of about 1.6 million refunds issued, the average amount was $523.00," Henderson said.

By Wednesday morning, the revenue department had received over 671,000 state income tax returns electronically, which is the preferred method of filing.

"Electronic filing is the most error-free method of tax filing and it is also the method that insures you get your refund back more quickly than on paper," Henderson said.

"The average refund processing time for electronic returns is about 10 business days. With paper returns, you're looking at about 12 to 16 weeks," he said.

The deadline for filing your state return is May 15.
