Evidence of vagrants found inside burned building, which had been vacant since Katrina

Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a three-alarm fire in Mid-City Friday morning.

Flames swept through a vacant, two-story woodframe building in the 200 block of North Broad at Bienville shortly after 6:30am.

Investigators say the building had been vacant since Katrina and was scheduled for demolition Friday.

Firefighters found several mattresses and other items in the building, indicating vagrants may have been there, but no one was found inside.

As the fire burned out of control, a portion of the second floor collapsed, but there were no reports of injuries to any of the 21 firefighters who fought the blaze.
