Short-term rental committee head pushes idea at City Council meeting
The co-chair of a committee studying the problem of illegal short-term rentals in New Orleans is calling on the City Council to promote the establishment of a "strike force" to identify and deal with the problem.
Brian Furness told the Council's Housing Committee Monday that illegal short-term rentals are costly to legitimate lodging operators.
"We estimate that every year legitimate lodging operators lose almost $13 million in bookings to illegal short-term rentals," Furness said.
Furness also called on the administration to crack down on illegal short-term rentals, which he says is a citywide problem.
"Our preliminary research identified over 550 illegal short-term rentals, 1,100 bedrooms offered on a daily basis," Furness said.
