Democrat Karen Carter Peterson files bill seeking repeal
A state Senator from New Orleans who also serves chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party has filed legislation to repeal the Louisiana Science Education Act.
Karen Carter Peterson has made the effort twice before but identical legislation filed in 2011 and 2012 failed to make it out of committee.
Under the law, public school teachers are permitted to use supplemental materials in addition to approved texts while teaching scientific subjects.
While supporters say this promotes open discussions about such theories as evolution, critics have argued that the state has opened the way for creationist teaching.
The law was approved by the legislature and signed by the Governor in 2008.
