Bernie Pinsonat says it will be tough to sell the public on a sales tax increase
A political pollster says it will take a "herculean effort" by the Jindal administration to gain the support of lawmakers and their constituents to pass the governor's tax reform proposals.
Bobby Jindal is proposing to eliminate the state income tax and raise the state sales tax to nearly 6 cents on the dollar.
In an interview with 99.5FM Wednesday, Bernie Pinsonat of Southern Media and Opinion Research, Inc. said, "Jindal has a very tough sell. This is complicated, and it's very hard for the average person to figure out how am I gonna come out ahead."
Pinsonat says the vast majority of people in Louisiana are very skeptical of an increase in sales tax.
"There are a lot of poor people in Louisiana who really do not benefit from a removal of the income tax. They only know one thing: they're gonna pay additional sales tax," Pinsonat said.
