Bridge users save $1,368,000 by not having to pay the tolls, spokesman says
It's been 23 days since the state's transportation agency stopped collecting tolls on the Crescent City Connection - after a judge nullified the vote last November to extend the tolls for another 20 years and set a new election for May 4.
On Thursday, the group Stop The Tolls presented a "symbolic" check to bridge commuters to show them how much they've saved by not having to pay the tolls.
"Just in the last 23 days, all the commuters of the Crescent City Connection have saved $1,368,000 in tolls," says John Roberts, spokesman for Stop The Tolls.
Roberts says the group plans to hold rallies and other events in an effort to convince voters to defeat the toll renewal proposition.
Voters in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes will go to the polls May 4.
