Marlin Gusman raises possibility that a video showing drug use and weapon possession in the jail he oversees may have been doctored
Testifying in a federal hearing, New Orleans Sheriff Marlin Gusman raised the possibility that a video depicting drug use and weapon possession in the jail he oversees may have been doctored.
Gusman was imprecise on exactly when he first saw the videos made in 2009. And he said he didn't remember ever having seen the detailed images seen in the recently released video until he saw excerpts this week on television.
Asked by an attorney for the city why he never contacted federal or state law enforcement agencies about activities seen on the videos, Gusman said his main concern was whether any of his staff was involved in the activity.
He testified Thursday in a federal hearing on a proposed agreement he reached with federal officials to improve jail conditions.
The city is highly critical of Gusman and is fighting federal court approval of the agreement, saying it could force the city to pour more money into a badly run facility.
The city's questions also touched on recent corruption convictions of two former jail officials.
