NOLA Bike to Work Day to raise awareness of the benefits of biking
Hundreds of bicyclists, some perhaps dressed in business attire, are expected to hit the streets of New Orleans today to participate in the 2nd NOLA Bike to Work Day.
Organizers say it's a day set aside to encourage people to leave the car at home and instead ride a bike to work.
"Biking is such a great way to add different kinds of activity, and it's such a green and wonderful way to get around the city," says Dr. Karen DeSalvo, the city's health commissioner. She plans to ride a bike to work today.
Bike to Work Day events include meet ups at bike convoy hub stations throughout the city from 7-7:30am. Those who work in the CBD can join experienced riders at these hub stations and ride together downtown.
A morning meet up for all riders will be held at Duncan Plaza, across from City Hall, from 8-10am.
At 8:30am, the Young Leaderrship Council will install its 200th bike rack in front of City Hall.
And the day ends with a Bike to Work Day After Party at the American Sector at the National World War II Museum, from 5-8pm.
