400-foot pier over Lake Pontchartrain had been closed since Hurricane Isaac
For the first time since Hurricane Isaac, the Mandeville fishing pier will be open to the public this weekend.
Mandeville Mayor Donald Villere says work to repair storm damage to the pier, which extends 400 feet into Lake Pontchartrain, was completed and the pier opened at noon on Friday.
City officials had hoped to have the pier ready for Memorial Day weekend, but unexpected delays in the delivery of materials needed to complete repairs delayed the reopening.
The repairs to the pier cost $343,000, with the federal government picking up 75 percent and the city 25 percent. The slow-moving Isaac inflicted significant damage to the pier, ripping up decking, handrails and fencing.
