Landrieu administration reportedly pressing ahead with proposal to convert former hospital into City Hall, Civil District Court
The old Charity Hospital building may be the next City Hall.
The massive 1930s-era art deco-style building never re-opened after it flooded during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The state is building a new medical complex in Mid-City.
The Charity building is one of several spots officials have looked at to replace the current City Hall and civil court complex, which is run down and too small. Now, the city is pressing ahead with a proposal to preserve and renovate the landmark hospital building for use as a new home for City Hall and Civil District Court.
An outline of the plan released Wednesday includes estimated costs of more than $270,000, funded through state and federal funds and tax credits, plus city-issued revenue bonds.
