City Council hears presentation on the negative impacts of reduced ferry service
A spokeswoman representing Algiers Point business owners told a City Council committee Tuesday that reducing the hours of operation of the Algiers-Canal Street ferry has led to hard economic times for them.
"For the bars and restaurants in Algiers Point, this has effectively eliminated all of our tourism business in the evening with the ferry hours, especially Monday through Thursday, shutting down," Vanessa Thurber told the Transportation Committee.
Thurber says bed and breakfasts are particularly hard hit by the reduced hours.
"With the newly limited hours, the accessibility has basically been eliminated, and so have the reservations," Thurber said.
Thurber recommended that the ferry and Algiers Point be promoted as a tourist attraction, and she asked the committee to implore the new ferry operator to take tourism into account when making plans for the future operation of the ferry and its hours.
