State school supt. not sure if his department will be able to fund the wait list
State Education Superintendent John White announced Monday that the wait list for the first year of the "Course Choice" pilot program has grown to over 1,000 students, and more than 2,000 families and counselors have registered students for courses through the 2013-14 school year.
During a teleconference, White said the pilot program has exceeded its capacity by more than 50%.
"We believe we have, because of the pending start of school, only about a week to make a final decision as to whether or not we're going to be able to fund the wait list," Smith said.
Initiated by the Legislature in 2012, Course Choice provides Louisiana students access to hundreds of in-person and online academic and career education courses often not available in traditional schools.
Parishes across the state have seen demand for the program with student enrollment requests, according to the state Dept. of Education.
Families on the wait list will receive notification as space or additional funding becomes available. Enrollment will continue until the end of the Add/Drop period at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, at which time families will receive final notification regarding their student's enrollment status.
