Penalty for nonpayment is contained in a proposed ordinance to be introduced next week
New Orleans City Council President Jackie Clarkson says a proposed ordinance will be introduced at the next Council meeting (August 8th) to deal with Sewerage and Water Board customers who don't pay the sanitation fee.
"We're now putting the fine tuning on our ordinance, and it's going in on first reading next Thursday, and it will cut off the water if you don't pay," Clarkson told 99.5FM Wednesday.
That penalty for nonpayment was proposed by the Landrieu administration last fall.
A report issued last week by the city's inspector general said $8.5 million in sanitation service fees went uncollected in 2011, and more than one third of customers are delinquent in paying their fees.
Clarkson says the proposed ordinance will contain exceptions to water service cutoff.
She hopes to have the measure passed and ready for implementation by September 1st.
