No injuries reported
Authorities are investigating the cause of a chemical leak at the Avondale Container Yard.
The Times-Picayune reports that the leak was reported early Monday and involved the chemical sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, a substance used in fungicides and algaecides.
The Environmental Protection Agency says sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate is used for treating "ornamental plants, turf grasses, terrestrial landscapes, in commercial greenhouses, garden centers, nurseries and storage areas.''
The chemical targets algae, moss, liver worts, slime molds and their spores, along with other pests. The EPA says the chemical shows human exposure could cause minimal to mild toxicity, such as skin irritation or eye damage.
The extent of the release was not immediately known. No injuries were reported.
